Poetry
National Poetry Month began in 1996 in the States, and in 1998 in Canada. It was brought about to highlight the extraordinary legacy and ongoing achievement of American and Canadian poets, as well as poets all over the world. It assists teachers in bringing poetry into the classroom and homes of all students.Should poetry be celebrated all year long? Of course. It is very easy in the primary grades to enjoy poetry all year long. Most texts have an element of poetry to them at this age. I think the struggle comes at the intermediate level to really introduce the vast world of poetry.
I like teaching poetry in my class, because it breaks all the rules and lets my writers, write. It takes away conventions that they are normally restricted to on a daily basis. It gives my young writers' freedom to say what they want to say.
The centers included in this package are just a stepping stone to the introduction of poetry. This package can work for all ages of writers.
Our bundled package includes a poetry writing contest with certificates and guidelines. I added this to the package because I found that most contests were not open to my student's age group. It also allowed us as a school to recognise some incredible poets.
Spring into Poetry month includes:
Do it yourself instructions, examples and activity sheets for Acrostic, Cinquain, Haiku, I Wish, Rhyming, 5 Senses, Shape, and 5W’s poems. This package can be made into centers or used as lessons as a whole class. There is a student record sheet that keeps track of which centers the students have completed and a certificate acknowledging their EXCEPTIONAL achievements in poetry. It also includes a step by step response to poetry section. Students are asked to share what they think, feel and wonder about poetry. Two response sheets have been included.

Autism Awareness Day
This year on April 2nd we celebrated "World Autism Day". The students purchased light up bracelets in support of Autism research. I found two incredible texts for explaining the exceptionalities of students with Autism. These were great for the younger students in my class, who have lots of questions and compassion.
These are worth hunting down for next year to share with your class.
